Vertical File Index             

The South Carolina State Library maintains a vertical file collection of information about towns, cities, counties, events, people, landmarks, and other topics relating to South  Carolina. The files contain pamphlets, newspaper clippings, correspondence with staff, articles, historical sketches, and other informational materials.  Included is also a small general file collection on material that is not specifically from or about South Carolina. 

This website is an index only. You may request to see materials at our information desk at the State Library (contact information is listed below).  Be aware that there may be lots of information under a certain subject heading or only one small article. 

The index is organized alphabetically by Library of Congress subject heading.  Many entries have see or see also references. See references guide you from a subject heading that is not used to one that is found in the catalog. See also references guide you to additional subject headings that are related.
